As suburbanization is growing and growing in the city, the so-called rural area, backyard, and green land area of Hong Kong are facing several issues such as an increase in land consumption, land reclamation and so on. The conflicts between human race and the wild seems to become more tense day by day.
In this artwork Series “Complementary Colour”, we are trying to imagine ourselves as animals stepping into the civil world, seeing, and feeling the urban zone through their perspectives. 3 mammals that can be found in Hong Kong are depicted, namely eurasian otter, masked palm civet and small Chinese civet, as the center of the artwork garnished with elements of the urban and nature side. The overlapping of different elements forms a strong impact that stress out the conflicts between the cities and nature.
3 pairs of complementary colours were used separately in each of the artwork to draw people’s attention to details of the artworks. The impactful contrast can add an artificial touch to the works which again underline the conflicts between human being and wildlife animals.
There are only 3 pairs of complementary colours in the world, which are red & green, yellow & purple, and blue & orange.
OH, let's not forget black & white.
Eurasian Otter (歐亞水獺)
Lutra lutra
Masked Palm Civet (果子狸)
Pagima larvata
Small Chinese Civet (小靈貓)
Viverricula indica
Fun Fact
Complementary colours are pairs of colours that when you mixed or combined them together, they will cancel each other out and form a greyscale colour. However, if you put these pairs of colours next to each other, they create the strongest contrast among other combinations. Because of their nature, complementary colours are also called opposite colours.
